We have loads of resources... We could make a resources page for each type. How about that?! Books, Wikis, Websites, Blogs, Podcasts, articles...
About BLOGS ***There is a really cool feature in this wiki that gets blogs to feed right here. So all members could use this as your 21st Century learning portal and come for a quick glance of what people are talking about. Five are CO blogs/info are already on the NEWS tab in the top. That is all they will allow there, but I could add more on a blog page too.

I know that CAL created the Learner Bill of Rights, has there been movement toward a survey of the 21st c learner? or The definition of a library in 21st c learner context? These are needed and would be very useful to us all. I would love an update on this progress from any of these attendees. Leslie

It's so easy to make and edit movies now...we can use these in teaching, assessing and learning. I'm interested in thinking about how to BEST use videos for varying purposes and learning needs. One biggie is in staff development. How can video be used to assist staff development- yours others...

Use of space tells us a lot about our learning priorities...I used to look at how much the teacher sat at her desk vs how much she roved around the class, helping kids... If the teacher desk was valued as really important it automatically showed me that it was probably more teacher centered classroom than a learner centered classroom. What does your learning environment say about your view of studetns and what and how they learn?
how do you arrange the space in your class or library or ideatorium or learning commons to reflect the needs of 21st Century learners? Here are some perspectives and resources,

As a Teacher I see myself first as a learner and then as a facilitator. This year, as I have immersed myself in 21st Century Learning and tools, this term "transparency" has a new meaning. In the last two News posts, we have people talking about transparency...Joyce Valencia describes, and I agree, how she has embraced this new 21st Century habit of mind "I've welcomed the ability to reflect out loud, to join the discussion, to contribute." Web 2.0 tools such as this wiki invite us to reflect out loud, join the discussion, and contribute...We can all learn so much when we all can embrace this mentality...but it is hard...
The flip side of this is in using Web 2.0 tools with our students. Helping them open to putting their ideas in progress out there for others to see. If we can help them to do this it offers us their teachers a window into their mind's eye and thinking. In this way these tools and this habit of mind can grow into a wonderful assessment of thinking and learning, if we open to it.
Have you embraced it? What is hard about it? What barriers are you finding with throwing your ideas out there? How can we help ourselves to join in this greater conversation and connect? How can we provide our students with environments and experiences that open to thinking in progress?

As for Facebook, yes I can waste time on it like the best of them, but here's a link from Joyce Valenza's twitter feed about educational applications available on FB if one were able to use them/refer to them: http://www.astd.org/LC/2009/0709_ellis.htm Tech Tool: Facebook Applications for Learning By Ryann Ellis

It is hard to get education to switch from test taking, straight line agendas and "core knowledge" book practices to the flipside of real 21st Century Learning. However, what I have found is schools and administration take the state seriously and as the vocabulary is used from top down, teachers can start to see the purpose of switching. For us as librarians this is the best way to spread that vocabulary and focus to the general population so that it becomes daily jargon and then daily practice. If CDE is moving in this direction that is extremely powerful for our schools.

One of the reasons that I think Obama won the Presidential election is that he has a much firmer grasp on 21 Century skills and Web 2.0 tools. He was able to connect to the young voters in a way that McCain was not able to do. He used social networking, podcasts, texting, emails, etc to connect with voters. The first I heard of president Obama was via the viral Youtube Obama Girl. i googled his name and saw his myspace page. I was intrigued that a candidate was using these tools and taught my kids about how the face of communication is changing. (Not that Obama had anything to do with the Obama girl video, but it did get people's attention.)
Hopefully, we will see President Obama push for these skills to be taught with less emphasis on rote skills.

Well, I guess there's no better place for a 21st Century educator like you! Wrapping up the end of the school year. I'll be sending you a district email to confirm the Web 2.0 training on the 29th of July. I'm resisting subconsciously the start of the next school year. Summer will go by too fast as it is.

More and more educators are connecting their classrooms and students to the larger World Wide Web community via Web 2.0 tools like blogs, wikis, podcasting and other internet forums e.g. VoiceThread and others. I think it has huge potential. Students are immediately engaged and invested in their work when they know that it will be posted on the internet for everyone to see. Web 2.0 tools are excellent for collaboration, creativity, and discussion. They also raises issues like security and privacy. Some schools have to deal with internet access being filtered or rigidly censored so that teachers and students may not have access to some web 2.0 tools. What do you think about these issues? How do we balance giving students access to the world while keeping them safe?

It is difficult because I work on lessons at home then get to work only to find the site is blocked. Our District has a cumbersome method of unblocking sites. You have to request through your principal. But since the site is blocked, they can't see it and usually just forward the request to IT. I think if any teacher requests a site to be unblocked, it should be blocked.
I would also like to see an age or level specific filters available. What is okay for high schoolers is not okay for third graders. But it seems to always be District wide. Also it would be nice as an adult to read blogs at work. Most are blocked.
But educating students how to be safe and aware while on the Net is more valuable than relying on an external filter that breeds a false sense of "safety."

Connectors vs Practitioners

I just heard a podcast on Ed Tech talk and the speaker was discussing how people with PLN's and who learn from nings, wikis, Google Readers and blogs are the connectors. We connect to one another and learn through this web of connections.
They then made a distinction between connectors and practitioners.
Practitioners were those who engage in best practice, but do not have the time to make these connections, create this learning community, learn from the outside or MOST IMPORTANTLY, share with us all the wonderful things they are doing.
My question for discussion, knowing that there are blurred lines and it is not always and either or, BUT how can we connectors get the practitioners to join us and share in places like this?
Are you a connector? Practitioner? both? how do you manage your workflow- or how can you ammend it so that you can be doing both?
And how can we make this wiki a place that assists that process?

RE: Connectors vs Practitioners

Librarians typically view themselves as connectors, but they also often feel pressure to put on their practitioner hats, especially when it comes to being able to demonstrate the latest technologies to colleagues.
Here's a related idea that would shake up learning in our schools--what if we enabled our students to develop skills as both connectors and practitioners? PLNs for students, wikis for distinct learning units, sharing and commenting through student blogs, and posting of student work on YouTube or Flickr are just a few of the options. Imagine a framework for 21st century learning that encourages both educators and students to function as connectors and practitioners alike.
As to how this wiki can assist the process, I would love to see a link or links to actual teacher or librarian iGoogle pages set up as PLNs. What do they look like? How does one set them up? How does one continually revise them? You know, sort of an iGoogle PLN for Dummies!

I agree Mary! wroksheets and what about testing...seeing the test as the be all and end all of learning has hurt this entire country's educational system to the core. Educators have become afraid to actually teach anything that is not on the test. FEAR. Evidence? Why is it that I think that? It is because when I call a librarian after CSAP is over they are bombarded with people interested in having real learning experiences. WHY would people wait until April to teach this way? Testing and the view that we must teach the test is a MAJOR BLOCKADE. We've GOT to refocus on learning and KNOW in our heart that learning WILL transfer to a testing situation IF the test has anything at all valuable on it.
