The What is 21C Learning states, "The community assures equity and embraces diversity, and its rich interconnection of relationships makes each individual as well as the overall community more vibrant and resilient." This implies that stakeholders at every level need to be learners. How do we support and encourage this culture shift?

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and I live in Australia. I may be coming to America later this year on scholarship. I am currently developing my teaching practice in ICT using Moodle and Wiziq. Through Wiziq I've met a number of very interesting educators but I like what I see happening in Colorado 21st C. It seems a better fit for where I want to take my own pedagogy. I've had a good look at this site and would really like to connect with some of the people teaching in schools - especially the Middle schools. I would like to visit when/if I get to America. Collaborate and discuss best practice and the vision for integrating technology into our schools. Our year 9 students now receive a laptop as part of the Education Revolution of the Rudd Labor government. As yet there isn't a common goal for using ICT in the way you are using it. I'd like to hear from anyone who is interested in sharing. Hope to hear soon.. Brigitte

We have loads of resources... We could make a resources page for each type. How about that?!
Books, Wikis, Websites, Blogs, Podcasts, articles... About BLOGS ***There is a really cool feature in this wiki that gets blogs to feed right here. So all members could use this as your 21st Century learning portal and come for a quick glance of what people are talking about. Five are CO blogs/info are already on the NEWS tab in the top. That is all they will allow there, but I could add more on a blog page too.

We have added some new features to this wiki and are wondering ... What might we add that would make this useful space for you? What do you like here? What is most useful? What are we missing? What are your needs?

It's so easy to make and edit movies now...we can use these in teaching, assessing and learning.
I'm interested in thinking about how to BEST use videos for varying purposes and learning needs. One biggie is in staff development. How can video be used to assist staff development- yours others... here's a link about learning that I JUST got off twitter from Alex Ragone Math and Science Tutoring on Youtube. hmmmmm http://www.openculture.com/2009/09/tutoring_on_youtube.html?utm_source=bitly&utm_medium=tutorining&utm_campaign=bitlytutoring

I teach at a high poverty school, and many of the students do not go on any field trips either school initiated or home. I bought an iPhone a few months ago and one of the best features is the GPS. I kept thinking there had to be a cool way to integrate the GPS with the camera to create virtual field trips. I did find the perfect app. It is called everytrail. They also make the app for other cell phones now. I am trying to do at least one field trip a month and have the feed go to (my badly in need of updating) website. I do the entire trip using my iPhone. It is easy and convenient. You can also see your trail in Google Earth but for some reason, I never can see my pictures.
You can see what I have so far: http://classroom.saraschoolsites.net/ms_brooks_trips.html

Now that the new Colorado standards are rolling out, shouldn't we be having the conversation to deeply describe how we will assess 21st century learning, skills, habits of mind in an integrated inquiry context?

This is a powerful conversation! How did this inform the standards revision movement? Were some of the same people involved? How can we continue this conversation and reignite this flame to continue the movement forward?

I know that CAL created the Learner Bill of Rights, has there been movement toward a survey of the 21st c learner? or The definition of a library in 21st c learner context? These are needed and would be very useful to us all. I would love an update on this progress from any of these attendees.

Use of space tells us a lot about our learning priorities...I used to look at how much the teacher sat at her desk vs how much she roved around the class, helping kids... If the teacher desk was valued as really important it automatically showed me that it was probably more teacher centered classroom than a learner centered classroom. What does your learning environment say about your view of studetns and what and how they learn?
how do you arrange the space in your class or library or ideatorium or learning commons to reflect the needs of 21st Century learners? Here are some perspectives and resources, http://www.jisc.ac.uk/eli_learningspaces.html http://www.uq.edu.au/nextgenerationlearningspace/ http://edorigami.wikispaces.com/21st+Century+Learning+Spaces

As a Teacher I see myself first as a learner and then as a facilitator. This year, as I have immersed myself in 21st Century Learning and tools, this term "transparency" has a new meaning. In the last two News posts, we have people talking about transparency...Joyce Valencia describes, and I agree, how she has embraced this new 21st Century habit of mind "I've welcomed the ability to reflect out loud, to join the discussion, to contribute." Web 2.0 tools such as this wiki invite us to reflect out loud, join the discussion, and contribute...We can all learn so much when we all can embrace this mentality...but it is hard...
The flip side of this is in using Web 2.0 tools with our students. Helping them open to putting their ideas in progress out there for others to see. If we can help them to do this it offers us their teachers a window into their mind's eye and thinking. In this way these tools and this habit of mind can grow into a wonderful assessment of thinking and learning, if we open to it. Have you embraced it? What is hard about it? What barriers are you finding with throwing your ideas out there? How can we help ourselves to join in this greater conversation and connect? How can we provide our students with environments and experiences that open to thinking in progress?

It is hard to get education to switch from test taking, straight line agendas and "core knowledge" book practices to the flipside of real 21st Century Learning. However, what I have found is schools and administration take the state seriously and as the vocabulary is used from top down, teachers can start to see the purpose of switching. For us as librarians this is the best way to spread that vocabulary and focus to the general population so that it becomes daily jargon and then daily practice. If CDE is moving in this direction that is extremely powerful for our schools.

Well, I guess there's no better place for a 21st Century educator like you! Wrapping up the end of the school year. I'll be sending you a district email to confirm the Web 2.0 training on the 29th of July. I'm resisting subconsciously the start of the next school year. Summer will go by too fast as it is.
Take care, Al Kreinberg |

More and more educators are connecting their classrooms and students to the larger World Wide Web community via Web 2.0 tools like blogs, wikis, podcasting and other internet forums e.g. VoiceThread and others. I think it has huge potential. Students are immediately engaged and invested in their work when they know that it will be posted on the internet for everyone to see. Web 2.0 tools are excellent for collaboration, creativity, and discussion. They also raises issues like security and privacy. Some schools have to deal with internet access being filtered or rigidly censored so that teachers and students may not have access to some web 2.0 tools. What do you think about these issues? How do we balance giving students access to the world while keeping them safe?

I loved this article it really hit the reality of this job. I just think it odd to describe this move as "new" because it has been moving this direction for at least 6 years, but hey good to be recognized! Anyway, this article described my job to a tee!
