Hello
Apr 28 2009, 6:10 PM EDT
As per our instructions from Saturday, and after Leslie's kind invitation, I wanted to hop on the site and get going. I am a 5th grade teacher at Freedom Elementary in D11, and we were so excited to attend the 21st Century Learning workshop! It provided both insight and encouragement, and we were all glad to be a part of a dynamic group!

I am a NBCT. Let me know if you need anything as you go through the process! I went through ECE cert in 95... so it's been a while, but I don't think it has changed much. It is a WONDERFUL learning experience- a great time of self reflection on your teaching. BEST of luck.Leslie |

My question is how can we best utilize 21st century learning to make us beeter at our professions, and incorporate into our NB's?????? I want to make this work and appear seamless!!!!!!!!!!! |

Well, I think that engaging students, having them asking questions and finding out the answers to them is a great start...I also believe that National Board Certified teachers do this routinely. As you get your packet think about what we spoke about at the WorkingShop connects to what you see in the NBCT requirements...Then let's chat some more about specifics!let me ask you...What 3 things are most important to you with regards to 21st Century Learning in your setting with your kids? Reminder too- tell all the freedom folks to fill out the eval before may8th so they can have a chance at winning a copy of Guided Inquiry ;) Looking forward to your top three list! Leslie |

Thanks Leslie - I think the most important things for me - as I look at 21st century learning/National Boards is to get kiddos thinking past the surface level; engage them in deeper thinking; aligning assessments to match essential targets; and making sure the skills/content they leave my class with will provide a solid framework for them to continue to learn. We just got back from a day with Jay McTygh - Understanding by Design - and it was huge. Kim and I did a year's work around Stiggins - Assessment for Learning (I am teaching parts of the class for the district) and Stiggins and McTygh are just huge in our classroom. Now, we need to put those things into place with 21st century learning. For example, today during my lunch-bunch reading group, the essential question was: What is wrong with Sam, if anything, in My Brother Sam is Dead. Great discussin and kiddos had to think - listen to others - and confirm/change their own thinking. Am I on the right track???Also, did you invite the other teachers to join? No one else is on the site - do I need to do this or will it come from ColoradoLearns? |

I think you are very much on the right track! I did invite all WorkingShop participants, maybe they need a personal reminder from you. I think the full benefit would come when all join in! Let me know if anyone needs another "formal invite." I'd be happy to send one again! |
